New Jersey Devils General Manager Lou Lamoriello has made yet another splash in the free agent pool, this time inviting unrestricted free agent forward Damien Brunner to training camp. The announcement came early Monday evening, just before the Devils opened up their preseason against the cross-river rival New York Rangers.
Brunner has agreed to a professional tryout contract (PTO), but has not reached a contract to play for the team just yet.
Brunner, 27, played 44 games for the Detroit Red Wings, in what was his rookie season, last year. He recorded 26 points, including 12 goals and 14 assists. The Oberlunkhofen, Switzerland native began his career in Nation League A, in his home country. In 304 games, playing with the Kloten Flyers, and most recently EV Zug, Brunner recorded 272 points, including 117 goals, and 155 assists.
Brunner is a sound two-way hockey player, fitting perfectly into the system the Devils have mastered for more than a quarter century. The scoring prowess that he can bring night in and not out should help bring some stability and balance to this already deep Devils lineup.
