The stage is set for the return of hockey in Newark, New Jersey. The Devils will open up their preseason against cross-river rival, the New York Rangers, tonight at the Prudential Center. Newly acquired goaltender Cory Schneider will be making his Devils debut in front of the home town crowd, while being opposed by Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist.
Schneider was acquired at the NHL Draft by the Devils when they traded their 9th overall pick to the Vancouver Canucks, in exchange for the 6’2 Marblehead, Massachusetts native. In 98 games with Vancouver, Schneider posted an exceptional 55-26-8 record, while playing as Roberto Luongos backup for the past few seasons. Schneider will be wearing his #35.
Many players will be making their Devils debut, along with their NHL debut. OHL sensation Reid Boucher will get a chance to show the coaching staff that the numbers he put up with the Sarnia Sting, can be brought over to New Jersey. The expectations are high for this young star, and he knows what he can bring to the team if given the chance.
Darcy Zajac, the younger brother of Devils center Travis Zajac, will also hope to make his debut tonight. Zajac was signed by the Albany Devils as an understated restricted free agent. Following in his brothers footsteps, Darcy played NCAA Division 1 hockey with the North Dakota Fighting Sioux. He signed his first professional contract, a two-way deal, on July 13 of this year.
