At halftime of Saturday’s game against Eastern Michigan, Rutgers will do something they’ve never done in school history. The Rutgers University Athletic Department will retire the No. 52 jersey worn by Eric LeGrand.
Eric’s story has been well documented, so we won’t rehash that here. LeGrand has become an inspiration to so many, not just in the Rutgers community, but throughout the country. From appearances to motivational speeches, LeGrand continues his fight to walk again.
Rutgers will retire No. 52, but LeGrand was told that when he walks again, the Scarlet Knights will un-retire the number for special occasions.
Specific details of the halftime ceremony have not been released, but a bunch of former teammates and other former Rutgers players have made their intentions to attend the game known.
Rutgers Communications Director, Jason Baum, announced on Twitter that former Rutgers stars Devin McCourty, Steve Beauharnais, Duron Harmon, and Logan Ryan will be in attendance. All four are currently playing for the New England Patriots. Also confirmed to attend the game to help celebrate this great event will be Mark Harrison, Joe Martinek, Alex Silvestro, Fabian Ruiz, and Ryan Hart.
Rutgers has announced there will be a surprise for LeGrand as well and while Eric is not big on surprises, he knows it will likely be something special. It’s anyone’s guess as to what the surprise may be.
It should be a special day for LeGrand, the team, fans, and the entire Rutgers community.
