The New Jersey Athletic Conference announced on Wednesday that the Montclair State field hockey team was chosen to finish above the standings this season after being selected in the 2013 Preseason Coaches Poll.
The Red Hawks earned four first place votes from the league’s seven head coaches. Among Montclair State, The College of New Jersey finished second, while Rowan finished third. Richard Stockton was selected fourth and was named the “dark horse” choice, followed by Kean, William Paterson, and Ramapo.
The field hockey team had an incredible 2012 season, finishing 22-2 (6-0 in the conference), and was on the way to grasping the national title game for the first time in Montclair State history. Not only were they so close to winning the championship, but they also set program records for victories in a season.
They also had the fourth-longest winning streak in athletic history at 20 games. These accomplishments sent the team to the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship that was held in Geneva, NY. They were able to defeat Mary Washington 4-0 in the national semifinal, but were conquered the next day by Tufts 2-1.
Luckily, four Lady Red Hawks who were names to the All-NJAC squad in 2012 are returning. This includes senior All-American Jennifer Tafro, who was the team’s leading scorer with 44 points on 15 goals and 14 assists. Junior defender Abby Erler will return alongside senior Sierra Rauchback, and senior midfielder Brooke Hullings.
The field hockey team begins their 2013 season on Friday, August 30th when it travels to St. David’s, PA to face Eastern University. The next day, they return home to face Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the first of a three-game homestand. Their first NJAC game is scheduled for Wednesday, September 18th at home against Ramapo.
