Bridgewater, NJ - The Somerset Patriots had an off day prior to facing off against the Bridgeport Bluefish four times in the next three days. While the players had a day of rest, the Patriots front office was obviously hard at work. The Patriots announced the signing of former big league shortstop Angel Sanchez on Tuesday afternoon.
Sanchez, 29, was playing for the Chicago White Sox Triple-A affiliate, the Charlotte Knights prior to his release from the major league organization on August 3rd. Aside from Chicago, Sanchez found himself in the show years prior. He appeared on the 25-man roster for three other teams – Kansas City, Boston, and Houston. He has played in 185 games in his major league career, 120 of them in 2010 for the Houston Astros. In 2010, Sanchez hit .280 and drove in 28 runs in just 65 games.
The Patriots right-handed pitcher Paul Phillips was placed on the Disabled List Retroactive to July 28th in order to free up some roster space for newly acquired Sanchez.
Sanchez was not in the starting lineup for the Tuesday night game against the Bridgeport Bluefish.
