TOM MAAYAN: FROM BASKETBALL TO MILITARY MAN?
Added by Anne Chavez on May 17, 2013.
Seton Hall freshman point guard Tom Maayan had a lot on his shoulders coming into the 2012-2013 season. He had a lot of playing time throughout the season because of an injury filled Pirate team and without him, the team would have probably been in a worse position than what they were already. Rumors spread during the season saying that Maayan would be heading back home to Israel. Like all Israeli men, Maayan would have to fulfill a three-year service commitment and everyone was unsure of when Maayan would be fulfilling that duty.
It was officially confirmed yesterday by multiple reports that Tom Maayan has indeed left for Israel. He left school early April and it is still unsure if he would be expected to return back to Seton Hall next season or at all. Maayan made the decision not to release this information right away due to the nature of the matter. If Maayan is not expected to return, Seton Hall has one open scholarship next season.
According to South Orange Juice (@SOrangeJuice) via Twitter, Maayan’s scholarship might go to Blaise Mbargorba, a Southern Methodist University transfer, who would be among the Seton Hall staff’s first options. However, there is no word yet as to where Mbargorba will end up. Mbargorba is a 6’11, 210 pound center who did not play at all for SMU this past season because he was redshirted after having preseason shoulder surgery. Mbargorba is a New Jersey native.
It is sad to see Tom Maayan go but it was a pleasure to see him on the court during my intern days with Seton Hall Athletics. Thank you for being part of the Pirate family. We wish you well and pray for your safe return.
