This is the DoubleGSports.com Athlete’s Voices column in which local star athletes provide guest posts updating their fans on what they have been up to. Today’s post is from former Rutgers Women’s Basketball star and current member of the New York Liberty of the WNBA, Cappie Pondexter. Cappie will be posting a blog on the first of every month.
Hi Guys,
Time to catch up on things. I know it has been a while but you must understand it is almost crunch time (playoffs) for me so I’ve been doing alot of preparation, traveling and playing! My holiday adventures with family and friends was the best ever..and I turned 30..my #30swag birthday celebration but I will talk about that a little later.
Turkish and Euroleague has been super competitive and I am anxious to start the playoffs in both leagues. Other than that, I have been trying to find time to relax, watch for fashion trends and gather pieces for summer outings and events.
Our regular Euroleague season finishes up tomorrow against a great team from Italy. Schio has two young WNBA talents, Danielle Mc Cray (CT Sun) and Jantel Lavender (LA Sparks). This team handed us our 2nd lost in early play and I am looking forward to do the same. It is important that we finish our play on a positive note and win in front of our fans. I love our fans because they give us so much energy and truly believe in us. I’m looking forward to this test and definitely can say I’ve been working my butt off to improve and push to make a deep run in Euroleague championship play March 18-24 in Ekaterinburg, Russia.
Turkish league has been great for us!! With a record of19-1, our only loss was against Mersin, which also has great WNBA players, Shavonte Zellous and Erlana Larkins, However, we came back and beat Antakya Homeend to get us back on track. This is one thing I love about Turkish league is the deepness of every roster and well rounded players from all over the world. Turkish league playoffs are right around the corner and were fighting to get home court advantage in the whole playoffs. So wish us luck!!
Now to my holiday season and birthday..My break was filled with close friends, family, lots of presents and food! We had amazing time getting to know each other little bit more and we enjoyed how the Turkish culture brought in the New Year. I definitely will have extra bags to take home back to NY when it’s time. The Christmas tree was stacked with gifts; some much gear I can’t even explain to you guys but definitely one of the best times I’ve had during holiday break since I was a little kid. It’s not often I get to be around family because I’m usually traveling or overseas but this year not being able to go home, my family away from home made it worth while. So thankful for them! Now, my #30swag celebration was amazing so much love and again more gifts giving, I could not stop smiling. The highlight of my birthday celebration was this emotional video which included family, friends, colleagues, Rutgers, NY Liberty and fans from around the world. My family and friends that came had one of the coolest experiences of their lives. For me, this was more important than my celebration. I was around people who I care and cherish the most. So shout out to #30swag team and all the love they gave me and #4seasons for the set up.
