2013 Double G Sports Awards Announced
After weeks of nominations and finalist voting, the 2013 Double G Sports award recipients have been announced. Teams and individuals were awarded this years honors as well as an award for NY/NJ sports moment of the year. In addition, one DoubleGSports.com staff member was awarded as the staffer of the year, as announced by website President, Gregg Snyder.
The Trenton Thunder received the award for Team of the Year. The Thunder led by manager Tony Franklin, went 74-67 this season and captured the Eastern League Championship. The Thunder took the award, receiving 56% of the votes.
Speaking of Franklin, the Thunder manager was awarded the 2013 Double G Sports Award for Coach of the Year. Franklin received 49.3% of the votes this year. The veteran skipper led the Thunder to the league championship as mentioned above.
Keeping with the baseball theme, New York Mets pitcher Matt Harvey was voted as the Male Athlete of the Year. Harvey received 38.3% of the votes, edging out South Plainfield High School’s Anthony Ashnault for the award. Harvey went 9-5 with a 2.27 ERA for the Mets last season, recording 191 strikeouts in 178.1 innings. He was also the starting pitcher for the National League in the MLB All-Star Game at Citi Field.
Another close vote came in the Female Athlete of the Year category. The three high school athletes were the top three vote getters, with Allentown High School’s lacrosse star, Alex Moore receiving 28.6% of the votes to win the honor. Moore finished her high school career with a New Jersey record 434 goals. She ranked 3rd nationally. Moore is committed to continue her playing career at USC.
After receiving 64.7% of the votes, the New York Islanders were given the award for Most Improved Team.
The Hofstra University softball team is well represented in this years awards. Two individuals received honors this year. Olivia Galati easily won the 2013 Double G Sports Award for Collegiate Female Athlete of the Year, receiving 63.8% of the votes. Galati went 40-12 with a 1.42 ERA, including a nation-leading 22 shutouts. She was the only 40 game winner at teh Division 1 level and was named a Second-Team All-American. Galati was drafted second overall in the National Pro Fastpitch Draft.
Also representing Hofstra is Caryn Bailey, winner of the Newcomer of the Year Award. The freshman led the team with a .360 batting average. She belted nine home runs and drove in 43 runs. Bailey started all 59 of the teams games. She received 55.1% of the votes in this category.
Rutgers-Camden soccer star, Mike Ryan, was named the 2013 Collegiate Male Athlete of the Year recipient. Ryan set the single-season school record with 22 goals and 48 points. The sophomore tied the single-season record with nine game-winning goals. He recieved 49.3% of the votes.
New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera closed out his legendary career this season. The final inning of his career is one baseball fans will remember for a long time. That moment was voted as the 2013 Double G Sports NY/NJ Moment of the Year.
After receiving 69.9% of the votes, Trenton Thunder beat writer, Matt Kardos was named the 2013 Double G Sports Staff Member of the Year. Kardos led the coverage of the Thunder through the seaon and their championship run. While he did not have the largest amount of content, Kardos is extremely active on social media, keeping fans and followers informed.
