Do The Mets Have Another Run In Them?

Added by Eddie Utley on July 31, 2012.

Can the Mets put together another run to get back in the playoff hunt? Or will they trade off some players at today's deadline?

After watching what could have been an unlikely run for the Mets, we are now watching a clusterf…

The Mets had chances to get players, but GM Sandy Alderson did not make any moves to help the team. Instead, we heard excuses like Jason Bay is the bat the Mets need.

We’re buyers, but we’re going to wait 10 days to evaluate. This was said in mid-July when Alderson decided they were going to wait until the trade deadline to make trades.

Now there are rumors about Scott Hairston and Tim Byrdak being on the trading block. One columnist went as far as to say that the Mets want Hairston back, but are afraid he priced himself out of their range. A pinch hitter is out of the Mets range? Really? Expect another winter of nothing.

When pitchers went down left and right, they could have done something, yet nothing was changed. Dillon Gee, Johan Santana, and, I guess you can include Big Pelf [Mike Pelfrey], since they haven’t really had a true replacement unless you count Chris Young. I don’t.

Even the Marlins and Phillies, who are behind the Mets, were willing to try to make a run. The Mets could have went for a pitcher or a bat, but they stayed static. If they lost faith in Lucas Duda then why not try to trade him to a team that wants him like the Rays? Lucas Duda for Wade Davis? Davis is in the pen now, but, he was a starter, so you’d have someone who could be a sixth man or maybe help fix the leaky pen or even replace Chris Young.

But, it looks like it’s time to give up, unless the Mets make a run, but it has to start now. The division is almost out of reach, but they’re playing the wild card teams that are right in front of them.

Alderson, I hope you don’t think 2013 and 2014 will be magical when you have to break in pitchers that you refuse to call up so they get a taste of the majors. It was like getting a root canal with no novocaine to get him to call up Harvey. They even had to use Miguel Batista when everyone knew he was not going to win.

Maybe 2015 when David Wright is playing for the Orioles and Santana and Dickey are gone…because who in the world would take advantage of them having great years and do nothing to act on it?
