Mets Survive June

Added by Eddie Utley on July 1, 2012.

R.A. Dickey is a big reason for the Mets holding things together in June.

While a lot of people waited for the June Swoon, and the Mets gave plenty of reason to expect it, it just didn’t happen. Even with the sweep, after a sweep, followed by a sweep then another sweep, they still managed to come out of June over .500. 15-13 isn’t lighting the world on fire or anything but it’s what the Mets had to do, keep over .500 for the month. Took some awesome pitching in the last few days of the month to do it but they did it.

The Mets now sit 2 ½ games out of first place and have a rougher month ahead. Not necessarily with great teams but a lot of divisional games including 6 with the Nationals. They also play the Braves and Phillies. Return trips to LA and Chicago should hopefully be beatdowns since the Mets need to prove they can beat weak teams.

A few more plays made and the Mets might have won 5-6 more games in that streak. The Mets have had some serious defensive miscues at times and also a shaky bullpen. The starting pitching has gotten the Mets through a lot of the mistakes but they can’t do it alone.

On the hitting side, Wright keeps hitting, Duda has been off and on, Davis looks to be on track and Murph is hitting again and even found his homerun stroke.

I don’t know what to think with this team, a few tweaks would be perfect but where do you tweak the team? Not many moving parts unless you can find upgrades. Plus you have to factor in that Alderson seems to be waiting for the roof to collapse before doing anything instead of trying to replace the roof before that happens.
