The New York Fury picked up their third win in four games with a 3-0 defeat of the Philadelphia Fever with a second half flurry of goals. The Fever drop to 0-2-1 while the Fury improve to 3-1.
After a scoreless first half, Kim Yokers put the Fury ahead with a goal in the 56th minute when she took advantage of a wide open shot on net. Yokers would put in another goal in the 70th minute when a deflection fell to her and she redirected it into the back of the net.
Gina DiMartino would finish off the scoring in the 80th minute putting the third and final goal for the Fury.
“I thought tonight was an improvement on last week,” said Fury coach Paul Riley. “We were more positive, energetic and brighter with the ball. They parked the proverbial bus in front of their goal and made it difficult for us, but we did a good job spreading them out and working the wider areas. ”
Fury goalie Michelle Betos did not need to make a single save to get her second shutout of the young season while Fever goalie Michelle Dalton made five saves out of the eight shots on goal she had to deal with.
Commenting on his standout players last night, head coach Paul Riley said, “Sinead Farrelly was the best player on the park tonight, but Kim Yokers, Leigh Ann Robinson both put in tremendous shifts.”
The Fury’s next game is this Sunday, at home against the Western New York Flash, 7pm at Hofstra. The Fury defeated the Flash in their first meeting at Sahlen Stadium in Rochester, 1-0.
“We needed this game before the battle against Western New York, and we certainly improved in a lot of departments tonight,” Riley said.
