Fury take on the Western New York Flash

Added by Steven Farkas on May 18, 2012.

The New York Fury head to Rochester on Saturday night.  They will be up against the Western New York Flash, winner of the WPS Championship last year, and a team looking like one of the top organizations in the WPSL Elite League.

Both teams won their first games against what appeared to be teams not yet ready for prime time.  Last week, the New York Fury opened their WPSL Elite season with a 5-1 win over the New England Mutiny. Merritt Mathias scored three goals and added an assist as the New York Fury dominated the New England Mutiny 5-1 in the team’s first game in the WPSL Elite league.  The Flash opened their season with a 4-1 win over FC Indiana 4-1 on May 12, in front of a crowd of 1,304. The win included a hat trick from Spanish international Adriana Santamaria Martin.

The Fury has several former WPS players on its roster including six former Philadelphia Independence players and three former Sky Blue players.  While the Western New York franchise is a carry-over of the WPS Flash, there are only three players on the team’s roster who were with the team last year: Alex Sahlen, McCall Zerboni and Kim Brandao. Lori Lindsey, who was with the Independence for two seasons, is also now with the Flash.

This should be the real test for each of these teams to show they are a top level franchise in the new Elite league.  Both the Fury and Flash could conceivably be the champion in this league, but Saturday night will be the first chance for each of them to show that they are top dog.  This could very well be the match-up for this year’s finals.  It should be a well played and exciting game.

The game will be played at Sahlen’s Stadium, Rochester NY 7:00 pm
