This weekend the Mets sent Jordany Valdespin back to Triple-A. It wasn’t that Valdespin was bad, he just was not getting the playing time to warrant a stay with the big club. The Mets could have given him a day at shortstop, a day at second base, etc. so he could get some at bats.
This is the Mets, however, so you knew he’d get another chance at some point. This same weekend, Ruben Tejada went down and appears to be headed to the disabled list. Hopefully Valdespin didn’t make it all the way to Buffalo before having to come back and head to Philly.
His first assignment could throw him off his game for a few days. Roy Halladay is first up for the Phillies. Hopefully, Valdespin gets to play and not ride the bench again. Valdespin looks like he might become a super utility guy like Daniel Murphy was planned to be with the way the Mets are using him. When the Mets were a winning team, there were several of those type of players. Marlon Anderson, Damion Easley, etc.
So, Valdespin was on his way out only to be pulled back in. Hope he makes the most of his chance. The Mets are rushing Ronny Cedeno back for Friday, so there are four days for Valdespin to make an impact and show the organization he deserves to be here.
