As the New York Fury round out their roster for the 2012 Elite League season, they have signed a pair of defenders to bring some experience and toughness to the back line. Once again, they are adding a player with WPS experience and also looking at the future with a fresh faced rookie to the professional ranks.
The first solid defensive pick is Leann Robinson a veteran of the WPS having played for FC Gold Pride in 2009, then the Atlanta Beat after being chosen in the 2010 expansion draft, and completing her WPS career in Philadelphia in the 2011 season, helping the Independence to their second WPS championship game.
“She is a quick, attacking fullback with first class final ball and a good mentality,” said head coach Paul Riley. “She had a marvelous season in WPS last year with Philly, and I’m a big believer she has the tools to be playing with the full National team.”
Jasmyne Avant is a native of Dallas, Texas, and will be making her professional debut in the 2012 season with the Fury. She is coming off a stellar career at the University of Florida. In 2011, she was an All-Southeastern Conference second-team selection after starting every game for the Gators at left back.
“Jazmyne is a quality young speed laden fullback with strength, tenacity and ability on the ball,” said Riley. “She is a great addition to our squad and a player with a bright future in the professional ranks.”
It’s nice to see such a strong concern for finding talent in the defense even as they have worked hard to find strong offensive attackers. Many teams focus too hard on the offense and don’t build a strong back line. The Fury, on the other hand, seem to be creating a roster with good balance on both the offensive and defensive lines. But, then again, that’s why Paul Riley has been such a successful coach. We expect no less than a great team representing New York, and Riley has done his best to give us that.
