The New York Mets did exactly what they needed to do in getting off to a fast start this season. With another divisional opponent, the Nationals, coming to town, hopefully this roll will continue.
David Wright, Lucas Duda and Daniel Murphy look good at the plate, but that’s what we all expected anyway, right? The thing is, David Wright looks more like vintage Wright then the guy who changed his swing to go with the new walls of Citi Field.
Jason Bay still looks pathetic; he had two hits in the series, but is not driving the ball at all. That platoon could be coming soon. With Captain Kirk (Nieuwenhuis) now on the roster, the youngster has his chance to prove he belongs. Ike Davis did not carry his spring hot streak into the season but, with him, I can see him getting out of it sooner rather than later.
Andres Torres went down in the first game and he even had an Angel Pagan hapless pickoff in the first game for those Pagan fans who wish he was here. So, the Mets really did trade Pagan for Pagan. Torres is now on the DL and his leadoff replacement, Ruben Tejada, had a four hit day on Sunday.
The pitching staff has looked good, especially the bullpen which looked dead during spring training. Defensively, the Mets had a few miscues as expected, but everything so far has been pretty positive.
If the Mets are going to do anything this year they need to remain ahead of the pack.
