Floyd Mayweather off base with tweet about Jeremy Lin’s race

Added by Gregg Snyder on February 13, 2012.

In case you are an NBA fan that’s been in a box the past week, or you are just not a fan of basketball, the New York Knicks Jeremy Lin has taken the league by storm recently. Lin was the talk of the league, its fans, and the media. He has become the Tim Tebow of the NBA.

Just two weeks ago, Lin was the fourth on the Knicks depth chart at the point guard position. In fact, there were many that thought the chances of Lin exiting the NBA were better than him seeing the floor in a meaningful game.

With the Knicks being hit by the injury bug, Lin got a chance. In the last four games, Lin has become the first NBA player to ever score at least 20 points and dish out seven assists in his first four career starts.

Today, boxing badboy Floyd Mayweather tweeted to tell you why Lin has had such big time hype. Could it be his performance on the court? Nope, Mayweather doesn’t think that has anything to do with it.

Mayweather believed the hype surrounding Lin is strictly about his race. Yes, that’s not a typo. In Mayweather’s twisted mind, the 109 point Lin has scored in his first four career starts has nothing to do with it. Nor does the 38 points he put up against Kobe Bryant and the Lakers. What about the energy and no fear type of game Lin brings to the court? Nope. It’s just about his race.

The exact tweet by Mayweather was “Jeremy Lin is a good player, but all the hype is because he’s Asian. Black players do what he does every night and don’t get the same praise.”

Lin plays in the greatest city in the world, for one of the larger named teams in the league. He has brought excitement and energy to Madison Square Garden and the New York Knicks. He has posted great contributions night in and night out since being put in the starting lineup. This is a guy that nobody expected to really see serious game action.

This is a 23 year old Harvard graduate who in a matter of a week went from having his hand on the door knob out of the league, to being all over ESPN and every other media market.

But that hype, nope, nothing to do with that. It’s all because he’s not black, just ask Floyd Mayweather. Wonder what New York Giants running back Brandon Jacobs might say to Mayweather, maybe “Stay stupid and shut up.”
