It’s been talked about for some time now. The 2012 recruiting class for Rutgers and Head Coach Greg Schiano could be the best in school history. That potential took another step toward reality this week.
The Scarlet Knights received two verbal commitments at a position of need. Schiano and his staff have clearly made the offensive line a priority throughout this recruiting season. It’s paying off.
Earlier this week, four-star offensive lineman J.J. Denman announced his intentions to attend Rutgers University after decommiting from both Penn State and Wisconsin.
This afternoon, with a couple Rutgers coaches in attendance along with family and media, Long Branch High School lineman Ryan Brodie announced his intentions to also play football at Rutgers. Brodie, a 6-5, 310 pound lineman chose Rutgers over Connecticut, South Carolina, Miami, and more.
Brodie joins the 6-6, 310 pound Denman as physically imposing lineman. Rutgers has been trying to rebuild its offensive line to help protect quarterbacks Chas Dodd and Gary Nova, while also opening running lanes for it’s talented group of backs. The additions of Denman and Brodie along with fellow recruits Chris Muller, Brandon Arcidianco, Derrick Nelson, and Maryland transfer R.J. Dill gives RutgersĀ young talent along with much improved depth.
Expect at least a few of these incoming players to immediately push for playing time. The combination of some nice returning players and this top recruiting class, Schiano finally has some room to play around with the offensive line. Maybe for the first time in a few years, the offensive line will not be as much of a question mark.
These lineman are a key part of what could very well be the best recruiting class in Rutgers history. National Signing Day is Wednesday, February 1, 2012. Once the commitments are official, check back here at Double G Sports for a full recap of the new Scarlet Knights.
