Anonymous Met goes off?
I saw this article earlier in the week but didn’t do anything with it. I wasn’t sure if it needed to be said. We all know how dysfunctional the Mets are now. This article is claiming a Met and not an office person is saying this or at least that’s how the headline reads. And they posted a picture of Pelfrey who is the introspective kind of guy who might say these things. Which is not fair to Pelfrey if people can make out that it’s him.
But who is the mystery person? Secretary who got fired? Gulf Coast Met official who was fired?
Here is the article for your reading pleasure. http://nymag.com/news/features/insiders/mets-2012/
Why invest in the Mets?
I have been trying to figure out why anyone would sink money into the Mets now. Before Reyes was gone, maybe but, now? Why are these investors popping up.
The Wilpons of course are trying to put a positive spin on things but how can you. With Reyes the team probably wins 10 more games and now he is gone and they added nothing but relievers who will be traded midseason. And David Wright will probably be gone too.
This is prolonging the inevitable. The Mets will lose more than $70M this year and who knows how much next year. Fans are not going to go see a losing team. The Rays are a winning team and still have issues drawing flies. Though in New York, if you’re winning then people usually show up.
But right now the Mets are a last place team unless something goes wrong with the other 4 teams who are ALL better. The Phillies may get old all at once, the Braves have young talent who could falter and so do the Nationals, the Marlins pretty much improved in every way so unless there are injuries they might be the hardest ones to see failing.
With Selig back in office, the Wilpons will probably have forever to overcome the debt issues unless it completely collapses and the Madoff scandal hits them hard. But their credit has dried up so they better hope these investors come in and don’t back out.
A lot has to go wrong for the Mets to win even 70 games.
I guess the endgame could be to sell the shares when the Wilpons get bought out. The new owner would probably want as much of the team as possible.
Oswalt is still unsigned.
The Mets could use some security and move Gee to swingman. Gee has shown he can get through a lineup at least once but for some reason he goes away from his secondary pitches later in games. Don’t know if it’s him or the catcher.
Oswalt supposedly wants $8M which is not much for someone of his caliber if he can bring it in typical Oswalt fashion. He wants a one year deal so he can seek a bigger contract next year. It’s like the perfect opportunity for the Mets, they need to be strong on at least one side of the ball and right now they aren’t.
The dollar store finds only works for a little while; sometimes you need to shop at a supermarket.
Santana, Oswalt, Pelfrey, Niese, Dickey and Gee would be a very good 6 which should help take the pressure off the lineup. Right now the lineup is a crapshoot, no telling if Wright, Bay, Davis and Murphy will return to form.
Oswalt would make a good security blanket compared to the retreads like Chris Young.
