Tannenbaum shows patience, but did not reel in the big fish

Where do the Jets go from here. With an obvious hole at the corner position, and a real possibility that they will lose Antonio Cromartie, how will the Jets recover if that scenario happens. Many believe that Cromartie will have ill feelings towards the Jets, and will make it very difficult on the Jets to retain his services. There is no doubt that the price for Antonio will be much higher the what they could have signed him for had they not gone after Nnamdi, Tannenboun knew this and took that risk. Give Tannenbaum credit for making the push to get Nnamdi, holding firm for three days in negotiations.
Although Nnamdi is a great talent, and could be neck and neck with Revis in terms of the talents they bring as the best corners in the game, I do not believe that the Jets really needed Nnamdi’s services. Cromartie provided more then what some call a “serviceable” job last year playing along side Revis. There were very few times last year that you saw Cromartie get beat in coverage, and the times he did get beat, was because he he was out of his comfort zone, playing 5 or more yards off the receiver’s.
The issue with the defense last year was the in-ability at times to cover the middle of the field, covering Tight Ends and slot receiver’s, along with backs coming out of the backfield. Eric Smith was signed just days ago. I like Smith because he is a BIG hitter, but he is to slow at times, trailing a lot behind TE’s that have both size and speed. In other words, he gets beat when playing from behind the ball; when he is in front of the ball, he will “lay the smack down” on someone. Also, our line backers are not coverage line-backers, David Harris is the best coverage backer we have, and he is not great in coverage, this is where teams like to attack the Jets defense.
There was a little disappointment throughout the Jet nation when we lost out on Nnamdi, but I believe in the guy doing the negotiating, the best negotiator in the football world and his name is MR. T
