The Trenton Thunder won their fifth straight game and the opener against the Reading Phillies 5-2 on the power of a monster Cody Johnson 3 run Hr and a strong Shaeffer Hall pitching effort. Hall threw six scoreless innings the longest such outing for a Thunder hurler. Cody Johnson’s Hr was a mammoth shot that left the building and landed on Centre Avenue.
Johnson’s Blast his sixth of the year gave the Thunder a 3-0 lead as Corban Joseph walked and Austin Romine singled. Melky Mesa also had three hits on the night with a RBI and his ninth double of the season.
The Thunder (24-19) added insurance runs one in the seventh inning and one in the eighth inning to make the score 5-0 against the Reading team (25-18). The Phillies got their two runs in the bottom of the eighth on a Cody Overbeck 2 run Hr on Warner Madrigal .
Shaeffer Hall pitched six innings of shutout baseball allowing five hits and no walks while striking out four Reading batters. The win pushes the Thunder above the Reading Phils in the standings to third one game behind New Britain and two and half games behind division leader New Hampshire.
The Thunder are in the midst of their longest winning streak of the season now at 5 games and counting.
If the Thunder win this series it will be their eighth straight unbeaten series. The Thunder has not lost a series since April.
The Thunder throw some more pitching tonight with Dellin Betances (3-1 0.94) on the hill against Reading’s Ryan Edell (3-1 4.18).
