Game Day: New York Rangers vs. Philadelphia Flyers Preview
Added by Gregg Snyder on March 6, 2011.
The New York Rangers and the Philadelphia Flyers will meet up for the fourth time of the season at 12:30 today. It is an important match-up, with playoff implications for both teams.
The Flyers have won all three of their previous meetings, scoring a combined total of twelve goals compared to just four for the Rangers.
The Rangers enter today’s game in seventh place in the Eastern conference. They return home after a dominating performance over the Ottawa Senators on Friday night. But that was a road game.
The Rangers are 20-13-1 on the road. Their trouble this season has been at home, where their record is just 14-16-3. Today represents a potential turning point for the Rangers.
If they can earn a big win against their division rivals at home, they might be able to develop some momentum and gain some ground in the standings.
This is a very important game for Philadelphia, as well. The Flyers are officially reeling, having won just two of their last seven games. They have developed a habit of losing to nonplayoff teams recently as well.
In their last four games against teams sitting outside of the top eight in the East, the Flyers lost by a score of five to three to the ninth place Buffalo Sabres, three to two to the tenth place Maple Leafs, and four to one to the conference worst fifteenth place Ottawa Senators. They also had to go into overtime in order to defeat the NY Islanders who are in fourteenth place, and lost three to two to Carolina in eighth place.
The Flyers have been tremendous until recently this season. It does appear however, that they are having difficulty motivating themselves to play a full sixty minute hockey game. As a result, the second place Boston Bruins are hot on their heels and looking to usurp first place honors.
Marion Gaborik, out with concussion-like symptoms, will be a game time decision for the Rangers today. Gaborik has been out of the lineup since the first period of the last game these two teams played against each other on February 20th. The concussion is believed to have happened prior to that game, however.
