Its early in the offseason but we have already seen a few trades take place. The rumor around baseball is there may be a lot of trades this season. There have also been some rumors that many mid to lower level teams will make some of their big time players available.
One rumor circulating lately is a three way deal that would send Mets second baseman Luis Castillo to the Cubs, Blue Jays first baseman Lyle Overbay to the Mets and the Cubs outfielder Milton Bradley to the Blue Jays. This rumor has however been called a long shot. It appears the Blue Jays dont have much interest in Bradley at this point.
The move would make sense for the Mets. Castillo’s value is higher then the previous offseason after he had a productive 2009 season. Trading him would open a spot at second base where they could sign free agent Orlando Hudson. Hudson wanted to join the Mets last season but they did not have any room for him and he eventually signed with the Dodgers. He was also a Mets fan growing up.
Overbay is not really that much of an upgrade over Daniel Murphy at first base, however Overbay does hit right handed pitchers very well. You would like to think he would be an upgrade defensively as well.
Can’t really fault the Blue Jays for being hesitant to acquire Bradley. The guy has been a train wreck everywhere he goes. He can flat out hit, its his attitude that gets him in hot water.
Stay tuned – Hot Stove season has just begun!
